Key Concept:

Nature inspires solutions to human challenges through observation, imitation, and adaptation of biological structures and systems.

Short Notes:

Nature is the natural world, including all living and non-living things not created by humans. Organisms in nature are well adapted to survive in their environment. By studying how living things function and survive, scientists and engineers develop technologies that mimic these natural features. This approach is called biomimicry.

Examples include designing airplane wings based on bird wings or developing strong materials by studying spider silk. Understanding nature’s designs helps create efficient, sustainable, and innovative technologies that improve human life and environmental health.

Key Terms:
  • Nature – The natural world including living and non-living things,
  • Adaptation – A feature that helps an organism survive in its environment,
  • Biomimicry – Using nature’s designs as models for human technology,
  • Engineer – A person who designs and builds useful systems or devices,
  • Organism – Any living thing.
Example:

Ethiopian farmers use traditional terracing methods inspired by the natural way water flows down hills, helping to conserve soil and water.
