Key Concept:

Ethical issues in biology guide scientists to respect life and the environment while using biological knowledge and technology.

Short Notes:

As biology and technology grow more powerful, ethical questions become more important. Ethics in biology deals with what is right or wrong when studying or using living things. This includes how we treat animals and plants in research, how we use genetic information, and how we protect the environment. Ethical biology aims to balance scientific progress with care for life.

For example, cloning, genetic modification, and animal experiments can help improve medicine and agriculture, but they may also cause harm or raise concerns. Scientists must follow ethical guidelines to ensure they respect animal welfare, protect human rights, and avoid harming ecosystems.

In Ethiopia and worldwide, respecting local traditions and values is also part of ethical science. Biological research must consider cultural beliefs, community well-being, and long-term environmental health.

Key Terms:
  •  Ethics – Moral principles guiding right and wrong actions,
  • Ethical Issue – A problem that requires careful thought about right and wrong,
  • Welfare – The health and well-being of living things,
  • Cloning – Making an exact genetic copy of an organism,
  • Genetic Modification – Changing an organism’s DNA,
  • Environmental Protection – Caring for nature and preventing damage.
Example:

Ethiopian researchers studying wildlife must avoid harming animals and protect their habitats, especially in national parks and protected areas.
