Key Concept:

Laboratory tools are essential instruments that help biologists carry out scientific investigations accurately, safely, and effectively inside a controlled indoor environment.

Short Notes:

In biology, laboratory tools are used to carry out experiments, observe small structures, heat substances, measure variables, and handle biological materials safely. Each tool serves a specific function and contributes to the success and safety of the investigation. Understanding the purpose and correct use of these tools is a vital part of biological study.

Common laboratory tools include the microscope, which allows the observation of microscopic organisms; the Bunsen burner, which provides a flame for heating substances; and the test tube, which holds small quantities of liquids. Other tools such as the thermometer measure temperature, while measuring cylinders and pipettes help in transferring and measuring liquids precisely. Proper handling, cleaning, and storage of tools is also essential to prevent contamination and accidents.

Key Terms:
  • Laboratory – controlled indoor place for scientific experiments,
  • Microscope – tool used to magnify small objects,
  • Bunsen burner – device producing flame to heat materials,
  • Test tube – small glass container for holding liquids,
  • Thermometer – instrument to measure temperature,
  • Measuring cylinder – tall container for measuring liquid volume,
  • Pipette – narrow tube used to transfer small liquid amounts.
Example:

In an Ethiopian high school biology lab, students use test tubes and thermometers to study how yeast ferments sugar solutions at different temperatures.
