The light microscope allows biologists to magnify and observe the details of tiny structures like cells, tissues, and bacteria using light and lenses. It is one of the most important tools in biological investigation, especially for viewing thin or transparent specimens.
A compound light microscope uses two sets of lenses: the objective lens near the specimen and the eyepiece through which the image is viewed. The total magnification is calculated by multiplying the power of the two lenses. Proper handling and use of a microscope involve adjusting focus with coarse and fine adjustment knobs and managing light with the mirror or built-in illuminator. Through microscopes, students can study the structure of onion cells, cheek cells, and microorganisms found in water.
