Key Concept:

The scientific method is a step-by-step process used by biologists to observe, question, experiment, and draw conclusions about living things.

Short Notes:

Biology is a science of inquiry, and the scientific method provides a structured way to investigate questions about life. This method involves making observations, asking questions, forming a hypothesis, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and drawing conclusions. It allows scientists to study life in a logical, testable, and repeatable way.

A hypothesis is a testable explanation based on observations. Experiments are then designed to test this hypothesis under controlled conditions. If the results support the hypothesis, it may become part of a broader theory. If not, the hypothesis is revised or rejected. This cycle helps scientists discover reliable facts and develop useful biological knowledge, such as how diseases spread or how plants grow best in different soils.

Key Terms:
  • Observation – Careful noticing of natural events,
  • Hypothesis – Testable explanation based on prior knowledge,
  • Experiment – A controlled test to examine a hypothesis,
  • Data – Information collected from observations or experiments,
  • Conclusion – Final judgment based on evidence from data.
Example:

In Ethiopia, students can use the scientific method to test how different amounts of sunlight affect the growth of plants.

Sample ESSLCE Question: Which step of the scientific method comes directly after forming a hypothesis?
A. Making observations
B. Drawing a conclusion
C. Conducting an experiment
D. Analyzing data
Correct Answer: C. Conducting an experiment
Explanation: Once a hypothesis is made, it is tested through experimentation to gather data.
